Yes, you can usually run a laptop on an unlimited eSIM hotspot, but the rule changes from provider to provider: some give hotspot its own daily cap, some take it from the same full-speed quota as your phone, and some leave it to the local network. Set your laptop to treat the connection as metered before you plug in, or background updates and cloud sync will burn the day's fast data first.
Key takeaways
- Saily says hotspot is unlimited on all its plans. Airalo allows tethering but counts it toward the 3 GB daily quota. Holafly caps sharing at 1 GB a day.
- TonMobile says hotspot works in most countries and on most phones, but depends on the local carrier and the device.
- A laptop spends data differently from a phone. Metered connection on Windows and Low Data Mode on Mac rein it in.
- If hotspot connects but nothing loads, check the tethering APN against the mobile data APN and restart.
Hotspot rules by provider
Hotspot (also called tethering or data sharing) lets your phone pass its mobile data to a laptop over Wi-Fi, a cable or Bluetooth. On an unlimited eSIM, the provider decides whether shared data is allowed, capped separately or counted against the daily full-speed quota.
The "full speed per day" column matters because laptop data usually comes out of that same pool.
| Provider | Hotspot allowed | How shared data is counted | Full speed per day | After the cap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TonMobile | Most countries | Depends on local carrier and phone, not guaranteed | Shown on each plan card, 1 GB on the UK and Turkey cards | 512 kbps on those cards |
| Saily | Yes | Unlimited hotspot on all plans | 5 GB | 1 Mbps |
| Airalo | Yes | Counts toward the daily 3 GB | 3 GB | 1 Mbps |
| Holafly | Capped | 1 GB of hotspot a day | Not published | Operator slowdown up to 1 day |
| Ubigi | Yes | Data sharing allowed (Egypt plan read) | 5 GB | 2 Mbps |
| Nomad | Not stated | Not stated on its unlimited pages | 2 GB on most plans | About 1 to 2 Mbps |
Our provider scores weigh hotspot rules as one of six criteria, and the scoring method explains how.
Read the card, not the headline
"Unlimited" describes the total over the plan's validity. It does not mean unlimited full speed, and it does not always mean unlimited sharing. The hotspot line on the plan card is the one to check before you pay.
Why a laptop spends more data than a phone
A laptop assumes it sits on home broadband. Phones know when they are on mobile data and hold back, while most laptops treat a phone hotspot like any other Wi-Fi network unless you tell them otherwise.
- System updates. Windows and macOS download updates in the background as soon as they find a connection.
- Cloud sync. OneDrive, iCloud Drive, Google Drive and Dropbox catch up on every file changed while you were offline.
- Desktop websites. Full sites load larger images and autoplay video that the mobile version skips.
- Video calls. A call from a laptop camera often runs at a higher quality than the same call on a phone.
The result is that the first hour on hotspot can use more fast data than a whole day of phone browsing. On a plan with a small daily quota, that leaves your phone in the slow lane for the evening. The glossary explains quota, throttling and reset if any term is new.
How to set up hotspot on an eSIM
Hotspot shares whichever line is set for mobile data. On a phone with two lines, make sure the travel eSIM is that line before you switch hotspot on, or the laptop will pull data over your home SIM.
iPhone
Pick the travel eSIM for data
Open SettingsCellularCellular Data and choose the travel eSIM. Turn off "Allow Cellular Data Switching" so the phone does not fall back to your home line.
Check data roaming
In SettingsCellularyour travel eSIM, switch Data Roaming on. Leave it off on the home line.
Switch hotspot on
Go to SettingsPersonal Hotspot, turn on "Allow Others to Join" and note the Wi-Fi password.
Join from the laptop
Pick the iPhone's name in the laptop's Wi-Fi list and enter the password.
Android
Set the eSIM as the data SIM
Open SettingsNetwork & internetSIMs, select the travel eSIM and turn on Mobile data and Roaming for it.
Open the hotspot menu
Go to SettingsNetwork & internetHotspot & tetheringWi-Fi hotspot. Menu names vary by brand.
Name and protect it
Set a network name and a WPA2 or WPA3 password, then switch the hotspot on.
Connect the laptop
Join the network from the laptop.
Activate in the morning
Most unlimited quotas reset 24 hours after activation. Activating before a work day lines up a fresh quota with the hours you need the laptop.
- 08:00ActivationYour 24-hour clock starts here.
- 16:30Quota usedSpeed drops to the plan's fallback.
- EveningSlow laneMessages and maps keep working.
- 08:00ResetFull speed returns for the next 24 hours.
How to stop a laptop eating your daily quota
The fix is to tell the laptop it is on a limited connection. Windows and macOS both have a switch for it.
Windows: mark the hotspot as metered
Connect to the phone's hotspot, then open SettingsNetwork & internetWi-Fiyour hotspot's name and turn on "Metered connection". Windows then holds back most updates and some app syncing on that network only.
In SettingsWindows UpdateAdvanced options, check that "Download updates over metered connections" is off.
macOS and iPhone: Low Data Mode
On a Mac, open System SettingsWi-Fi, click Details next to the hotspot and switch on Low Data Mode. Apps that respect it pause background tasks such as photo sync and automatic updates.
On the iPhone itself, Low Data Mode for the travel line is under SettingsCellularyour travel eSIMData Mode. Android has a similar Data Saver switch. These cut the phone's own background use, which leaves more of the quota for the laptop.
Pause sync and updates by hand
- Pause iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive before connecting.
- Turn off automatic updates in browsers, store apps and game launchers.
- Lower video call quality, or turn the camera off when you only need audio.
- Save big downloads and photo backups for hotel or café Wi-Fi.
Laptop left as it is
- Updates and sync start as soon as it connects
- Desktop sites load in full
- Fast quota can run out early in the day
Laptop set to metered or Low Data Mode
- Most background downloads wait for normal Wi-Fi
- Data goes to the work you are doing
- Fast quota lasts longer for phone and laptop
Once the quota runs out, the line keeps working at the reduced speed. Our guide to what still works after the daily cap shows which tasks survive the slow lane.
Hotspot not working on an eSIM: the APN fix
If the laptop joins the hotspot but pages never load, the usual cause is a mismatch between the APN used for mobile data and the APN used for tethering.
TonMobile's help center gives a simple fix that works on most phones.
Find the mobile data APN
On iPhone, open SettingsCellularyour travel eSIMCellular Data Network. On Android, look under SettingsNetwork & internetSIMsAccess Point Names.
Copy it into the hotspot field
On iPhone, scroll to the Personal Hotspot section on the same screen and enter the same APN. On Android, open the active APN and make sure its type field includes tethering (often written as "dun").
Restart the phone
Restart, switch hotspot back on and reconnect the laptop.
When the APN is not the problem
TonMobile notes that hotspot depends on the local carrier and the device, so a few networks may block it whatever the settings. In that case, contact the provider's support while the plan is still valid.
Which unlimited plan suits remote work
For a laptop you rely on daily, the size of the full-speed quota and the speed after it matter more than the price per day. The rough guide used across this site: about 512 kbps keeps email, messaging and maps going, about 1 Mbps adds standard video, and about 2 Mbps covers most video calls.
Large quota plans (Saily, Ubigi)
- 5 GB of full speed a day on the plans read
- Saily states unlimited hotspot
- Ubigi's 2 Mbps fallback still suits calls
Small quota or capped sharing
- A 1 GB card quota fills fast with a laptop attached
- Holafly's 1 GB daily hotspot cap limits laptop work
- Airalo shares one 3 GB pool between phone and laptop
Email, chat and documents fit a smaller quota on a metered laptop. Days of video calls need a bigger quota or hotel Wi-Fi. Our month abroad data guide helps estimate a daily figure.
Destination matters as well. See the guides for Europe, one country or regional and the USA, or start from the main unlimited eSIM comparison.
FAQ
Can I use an unlimited eSIM as a hotspot for my laptop?
Usually yes. Saily, Airalo and Ubigi allow sharing, Holafly caps hotspot at 1 GB a day, and TonMobile says hotspot works in most countries depending on the carrier and phone. Check the hotspot line on the plan card before buying.
Does eSIM tethering count toward the daily full-speed quota?
On most plans it does. Airalo states that tethered data comes out of its 3 GB daily quota. Holafly instead gives hotspot a separate 1 GB daily cap, and Saily says hotspot is unlimited within its 5 GB high-speed day.
Why is hotspot not working on my eSIM?
The most common cause is a tethering APN that differs from the mobile data APN. TonMobile's help center advises copying the mobile data APN into the hotspot field and restarting the phone. Some local carriers may still block hotspot.
How do I stop my laptop using too much hotspot data?
Turn on Metered connection for the hotspot network in Windows, or Low Data Mode in macOS Wi-Fi settings. Pause cloud sync, store updates and auto-playing tabs, and save large downloads for normal Wi-Fi.
Can I work remotely on an unlimited data hotspot while travelling?
For email, chat and documents, yes, especially with the laptop set to metered. For daily video calls, pick a plan with a large full-speed quota, such as the 5 GB a day Saily and Ubigi publish, or a fallback near 2 Mbps.
Does hotspot use my home SIM's data by mistake?
It can, because hotspot shares whichever line is set for mobile data. Set the travel eSIM as the data line, turn off automatic data switching on iPhone, and keep data roaming off on the home SIM.
